Today we will continue with book marketing strategies. Remember our part is to share everything as gathered from all working strategies with hundreds of authors over a long period of time. Your part is to abide in God and ask Him which strategy He has allocated for you, then go deeper in developing in that strategy.
We take into consideration that bookselling for a Christian author is a ministry. Therefore, we do not have a one-fits-all strategy. We have as-led-by-the-spirit -of-God strategy.
We look at how to own a shelf as a bookselling strategy.
How to Own a Shelf:
Previously, you could publish a single book, observe its reception, and then consider publishing another later. That time has since passed. Now you must continue adding to your authorship list every year or every two years.
(i) Short is the New Long
We encourage authors to adapt to the new writing strategy that short is the new long. Not every book you publish must be lengthy, but it must be of high caliber. How brief is brief? We recommend about 20,000 words to be sufficient for a book.
(ii) Be Known for Quality
The more (high-quality) work you continue to distribute, the more you will “own” your shelf space. This means that consistently delivering high-quality work will establish your reputation and make you stand out from the crowded book space. As a result, readers will trust your brand, be loyal and more likely to choose your books or programs.
What are the non-negotiables in book quality? Good storytelling, Editing, proofreading, layout, foundational publishing standards and print quality. Making an initial investment in the publishing phase will allow you to reap over a long period of time. Please pay someone to do a professional job for you at the beginning and capitalise on that to build a following and gain returns later.
(iii) Capitalise on Having Broken the First Book’s Barrier
By the fact that you are in the ACABA program, it means you already have a published book.
If this is your first book, well done. We acknowledge that the first step is always the hardest. But once you have overcome that initial challenge, you can leverage your success to propel yourself forward. By capitalising on the momentum gained from breaking through the first book’s barrier, you will find writing subsequent books becoming easier and more attainable. So get on to writing…
While you at it, remember to keep building upon your initial publication by exploring different formats, such as audiobooks, podcasts, blogging. e-books etc., think of the next book to cater to a wider range of readers. We will go to more depth on this in the second year of ACABA during the 10-months Authors Training and Empowerment program from February to November.

By offering these additional products, you are able to engage with readers who may prefer one by-product over another. How to Get Started
There are many more examples of authors who have taken one book and created an entire ministry with multiple by-products from it. If this is your strategy, get started. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and explore different formats or mediums to reach a wider audience.
Don’t wait for the perfect idea or opportunity to come along. Begin by appreciating the book that God has already given you and brainstorming potential by-products that can complement it. By taking action and consistently in delivering valuable content, you can gradually expand your reach and engage with your audience to keep them coming back for more and establish yourself as a thought leader and trusted authority in your field. Remember, success often comes from seizing opportunities and adapting along the way – but you need to be prepared for when the opportunity shows up.
That said…
It is possible that God wants you to only have the book you already have. If that’s His strategy for you, be content in all things. The best you can do is to maximise that book. The Master gave 1 talent to one servant, 2 to another and 5 to another. Do self evaluation, by the help of the Spirit of God, and know what God has given you. At the end of the day, the Master will require 100 folds no matter what you started with. If you have 1, he needs 2. If you have 2, he needs 4. If you have 5, He needs 10.
All the three cases require 100% so don’t be pressured by what your neighbor has – whether little or more than what you have. Be concerned by what the Master gave you. Remember, God has uniquely gifted each of us according to His divine plan. It is not about comparing ourselves to others, but rather about faithfully stewarding the talents and resources entrusted to us. So focus on using what you have been given to the best of your ability, knowing that the Master’s expectation is for you to multiply and grow in accordance with your specific blessings.
You do not even need 100 fold right away…
The Bible advocates the days of little beginnings. You are allowed to start with 30, then 60 then get to 100. Starting small and gradually building your audience allows you to learn and refine your content, ensuring that you deliver value and resonate with your target audience. Embracing the process of growth and being patient with yourself can lead to long-term success in establishing yourself as a respected figure in your field.
Just get started and build over a period of time. The question, each month, each year, what are you doing to advance God’s writing calling for you?

Over the last several years, though not intentionally and can only be by the mercies and leading of God, I have managed to fill my shelf.
I am happy to have and encourage as many of you as will be led by God to use this strategy.
It’s been a journey over a decade, so be patient and flow with seasons of God.
In prayers, draw up a pipeline of god’s plan for you then take advantage of the opportunities He brings you.
- The Path Series has 5 books in it but I have managed to write only one. I shall publish the rest over the next months or years or decades. But the pipeline is there.
- Stories Retold Series should include all the parables of Jesus but Patrick and I have managed to do 3. More are on the way as the Lord allows.
- Mungai-Environment Conservation Series has one more book to go.
- Character Development Series has probably 10 more books to go. Maybe more.
- Guided Writing Mentorship Series has 4 more books to go.
- The singles books will turn into series, perhaps or not. I am open to God’s leading.
I share this because I would not want you to think that I have everything figured out. We are called to walk by faith, one step at a time.
God will never show us the whole plan at a go, perhaps because we might get overwhelmed. So just get started and do the instructions He has given you today, then let’s see what tomorrow holds for us.
