What happens when something is working—but it is not what God has called you to do?

That is the powerful question at the heart of a new episode of The Better You Show, featuring Dr Muthoni Omukhango, National Director of CLC Kenya, publisher, author, entrepreneur and marketplace minister.

“God’s simplest plan for you is way higher than the best plan you have for yourself.”

Success can easily become validation. When something produces money, recognition or visible results, it can be tempting to assume that it must be God’s will. But Dr Muthoni challenges that assumption, explaining that something can succeed through hard work and diligence while still being outside one’s God-given purpose.

She encourages people seeking direction to return to the One who gives purpose: God Himself.

The conversation also distinguishes between people who know what God has instructed them to do but lack the courage or strength to act, and those who are still seeking clarity about their assignment. Both, she says, require prayer—one for strength and the other for greater clarity and the ability to hear God’s direction.

Purpose Is Bigger Than a Paycheque

Dr Muthoni explains that working in purpose brings a deeper sense of fulfilment, even when it does not necessarily produce more money. She reflects on the fact that she earned more financially when she was operating outside her purpose than she does now, yet she has discovered greater fulfilment, impact and obedience through her current work.

For her, purpose is measured not merely by income, but also by impact and obedience to God.

From Business Success to Kingdom Business

The conversation also explores Dr Muthoni’s book, Jesus Killed My Business but Gave Me His Kingdom Business.

The unusual title comes directly from her own experience. She had envisioned building a successful business and had even begun preparing for expansion when she felt God instructing her to close it. In surrendering what she thought she wanted, she discovered what she describes as God’s “kingdom business”—a work that has enabled her to serve authors, families, children and Christian communities across Africa.

What began as plans for a personal business empire has developed into a ministry of publishing and continental impact.

Through CLC Kenya, Dr Muthoni has been involved in initiatives connecting African Christian authors and developing reading and publishing programmes for children, teenagers and families. She reflects on the scale of the work today with amazement, noting that the continental impact was far beyond what she had originally imagined.

Leading From a Place of Purpose

The discussion does not stop at personal purpose. It also explores what it means to lead people when God has entrusted them to your care.

Dr Muthoni identifies three important principles of purposeful leadership: being anchored in God, modelling what you expect from others, and understanding the journey of the people you lead.

She emphasises that leaders cannot simply lead from knowledge or position. They must remain connected to God, listen for His direction and model the values they want their organisations and ministries to embody.

Her own journey from sales executive to sales and marketing manager, business development manager, head of publishing and eventually National Director has also shaped her understanding of leadership and empathy.
