When Dr. Muthoni Omukhango began her journey as a writer, she had already spent about a decade in the book industry — distributing thousands of books and Bibles through Christian Literature Communications (CLC) Kenya. Yet, behind the stacks of published works and glossy covers, she carried a quiet frustration: her own manuscript, Back on My Feet, remained unfinished after eight long years.
It was an irony she could not ignore. Here she was, helping others distribute their stories, yet unable to complete her own. In prayer, she asked God for help — perhaps a mentor, a coach, or a retreat to reignite her creativity. But, in a divine twist that only God could author, He gave her a different instruction: start a writing class.
At first, it seemed completely backward. She and her husband Patrick Omukhango needed help, not another assignment. But as she would later reflect, God’s ways are rarely linear. He often turns personal need into ministry, and weakness into a wellspring of service.
And so, they obeyed.
The Birth of a Vision
For two years, Patrick and Dr. Muthoni prayed, planned, and built. They developed a curriculum, shaped the lessons, and asked God to breathe on their vision. Then, in January 2020, the very first CLC Writing Class was launched.
Ten writers joined. Only one graduated after a whole year of training and encouraging.
It was humbling, even a little humorous — but it was also holy. Something had been set in motion. What began as an act of obedience became the seed of a movement.
Six years later, that small beginning has blossomed into a thriving community. Fourteen cohorts on, the Writing Class has produced over 48 graduates from 2020-2024. In 2025, there are 110 writers graduating in just one year from Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa, with new classes now opening in Eswatini . Each graduate carries not just a manuscript, but a testimony — a story of courage, perseverance, and calling.
Mentorship for Every Writer’s Journey
The CLC Group Writing Mentorship Class is not a typical writing course. It is a mentorship journey — one that walks alongside writers from the first spark of an idea to the final punctuation mark.
It emphasizes the place of the Holy Spirit in a writer’s journey and places high priority on developing manuscripts that help people to faith and maturity in Jesus Christ.
Writers meet virtually for 1.5 hours every week, journeying together through 14 weeks of intensive but grace-filled training. Between sessions, participants complete self-paced assignments designed to keep their creativity flowing and their discipline sharpened.
The program offers two levels of growth:
- Level 1 – Beginner Class: where aspiring authors craft their first drafts with guided support.
- Level 2 – Advanced Class: where writers refine their manuscripts into polished masterpieces ready for publishing.
Each writer receives tailored mentorship from experienced Christian publishers, honest feedback that builds confidence, and emotional and spiritual support that turns frustration into fuel. Accountability ensures they stay on course, while industry insights prepare them for the realities of authorship in today’s world.
At the end of the program, participants walk away with a complete and publishable manuscript — and the joy of knowing their published books will automatically be entered into the African Christian Authors Book Award (ACABA), CLC Kenya’s flagship platform for excellence in faith-based writing across the continent.
More Than Words: A Kingdom Assignment
What sets the Writing Class apart is its heartbeat. This is not just about producing books; it is about discipling voices. Each cohort is a community where writers grow not only in skill but also in spirit — learning to write from a place of conviction, purpose, and obedience to God.
Through this class, Dr. Muthoni and Patrick have witnessed ordinary believers become bold storytellers — pastors, teachers, mothers, professionals — all discovering that their words carry the power to heal, teach, and transform.
The mission remains clear: to raise a generation of African Christian writers whose stories resonate globally while authentically representing Africa’s identity and God’s redemptive work within it.
A Continuing Story
Looking back, Dr. Muthoni often smiles at the irony of it all. She asked for a mentor, and God made her one. She wanted to write a single book but now she is an author of 60 books, and God birthed a movement of writers through her obedience.
And much more, is the blessing of the writing class enabling her entire family to be authors – Patrick 13 books, their eldest Abiah 7 books, their second eldest Ella 8 books and their youngest Ethan 5 books.
From Kenya to Uganda, South Africa to Eswatini, the ripple continues — hundreds of voices now telling their stories for God’s glory.
As she often says, “When you say yes to God’s assignment, you never know how many destinies your obedience will unlock.”
So, to every aspiring writer, every dreamer staring at a half-written page — the invitation stands:
Don’t wait another eight years.
