Step 2-6: Build the Setting (the time and place where a story happens)

The setting is the where and when of your story. It’s where all the fun things happen!

Here are a few tips to get you started:

Pick the Time and Place: It could be in a forest, a busy city, or even outer space. And it can happen in the past, present, or future.

Learn about it (if you need to): Whether your story takes place in a real spot or time, it’s good to learn more about it. You can read books, watch videos, ask your parent to help you with research from the internet, or even visit if you can! This helps make your story feel real and fun.

Use Lots of Words: Describe your setting using lots of details. What does it look like? What does it smell like? What can you hear? Use all your senses to make a colorful picture for your readers.

Think About the Feeling: Think about the mood you want in your story. Do you want it to feel mysterious, or happy and bright? Use your words to make your readers feel the way you want them to feel.

Make it Important: Make sure your setting matters to your story. It should affect what happens to your characters. For example, if it’s very cold in your story’s setting, maybe your characters have to deal with cold!

Let the Characters Show it: Instead of just telling about the setting, let your characters explore it. Show how they feel about it and what they do in it. This makes your setting come alive!

Make it Better: After you’ve written your setting, read it again. See if it all fits together well. You can always change things to make it even more exciting!

By doing these things, you will make a cool setting for your story that will make your readers want to read more and more!
