Unit 1.0 Introduction to Children’s Writing Class (for parents)

The writing of your child’s book is a critical step towards getting published. Writing is the best way to share an idea or story that matters to your child. A simple book that he/she actually gets to write is better than an awesome one that he/she dreams of writing and is still in the head. This is why we are here today, now! To make sure that the book makes it out of his/her head into the world! Impacting someone’s life.

WHAT is the STRUCTURE of the class?

  1. This is a self-paced writing program
  2. One video per month to help your child grow in their writing skills
  3. Weekly (online) follow up on phone, WhatsApp or email as preferred by the parent/guardian
  4. Submission of assignments once every week (or twice every month). You will receive feedback on what to improve on
  5. Group webinars and/or convened sessions over school holidays with opportunities for interactions, questions and answers from the mentor(s)
  6. Graduation every last Saturday of November with recognition certificates and awards. Some will have grown as writers, others will be at an advanced stage to present shining and richer manuscripts for publishing and others will have launched their books

In this process, you should expect that your child will get an accountability mentor towards completing his/herbook. As much as no one likes criticism, if you’re aiming at your child being an outstanding writer and eventually a bestseller, positive criticism is an absolute necessity. Regardless of the reason for writing, at some point, your child will also need affirmation of some sort. When writers receive less than admirable praise, they can dwell on the critique rather than a glowing 5-star review. The reason a writing mentor is vital towards your child’s growth is that we provide critical feedback specifically towards the writing craft. By shredding his/her work now, we will help you develop the thick skin needed when he/she releases the work for readers’ consumption.

HOW will writing mentorship benefit your child?

Inspiration and Motivation

Although writing is often a solitary act, the creative energy to write cannot thrive in a vacuum. Input from someone outside of his/her writing process can breathe the needed life into the work and spark new ideas.

 Honest Feedback

Every writer, no matter how experienced, needs a reader to show them when something isn’t working. Every now and then in the writing journey, your child will need someone to point out the gaps in his/her story or concept or even someone to gently remind him/her, “You’ve done that before. You should try something else.”

Professional Development

Writing is as much a business as it is a creative endeavor, so it’s important to stay aware of new developments in the field. As your mentors, we will share information or point you in the right direction to help your child in research. This will ensure that he/she remain relevant to the changing trends in the writing and distribution of his/her content.
