My name is Esther Rugendo. I am a Kenyan woman, mother of two, and a PhD student. My research focus is on youth mental health and emotion regulation.
What I Am Writing About and My Motivation
I am writing a memoir about my experience in marriage, separation and divorce. I was motivated to use my story to inspire women going through similar experiences and to help them move towards healing.
Did I Encounter Writer’s Block?
Yes, I stopped writing for a while, took on other tasks, and came back to write when I got new ideas.
How I Handled Feedback During the Writing Class Journey
I was very happy to receive feedback from the reviewers because, being my first book based on a painful experience, I was just pouring my story and feelings on paper.
The feedback gave me guidance to make the next draft better.
How I Prioritised My Writing Journey and Other Commitments
I woke up one hour earlier than usual to do the writing. I also wrote for another hour during the day when I could.
My Experience in the Jade Writing Class
The content was very beneficial to me. I can definitely recommend someone else to join the class.
My Word for Aspiring Writers and Beginning Authors
Aspiring writers and beginning authors need to seek people who can guide them in their writing. That way, their book becomes high quality and relevant to the target readers.

Closing Reflection

Through CLC Kenya’s Jade Writing Class, I found guidance, structure and encouragement to shape my memoir with greater clarity and purpose.
